Choosing a palette for your home doesn't have to be a challenge

Finding the right color palette for your home can be a challenge, especially if you don't have any design experience. There are many factors to take into consideration, such as how the colors will look in different light sources and whether they go well together. In this post we'll walk through 10 steps that will help you pick out the perfect color palette for your home!

Step One: Start by picking out your favorite colors. These should be the colors that you like to have in your environment and around you personally. You'll also want to include neutrals such as black, white, grey, etc.

Step Two: Define whether your home's purpose is for living, entertaining guests, or both. If it's for living, then you want to have bright colors that make your home feel cozy and welcoming. If it's for entertaining guests, then consider a more sophisticated palette of earth tones. If it’s both, then decide which type of palette you prefer overall.

Step Three: Define the size of your room - Large rooms require bolder color choices with lots of contrast, whereas smaller rooms may look better with softer pastels or neutrals.

Step Four: Determine the light sources in your room - Are there windows with a lot of natural sunlight or is it more subdued? This will help you pick out colors that work well for the type of lighting they'll be exposed to. Colors like violet, purple and blue look great under bright lights whereas pastel pinks and oranges look better in subdued light.

Step Five: Consider your decor - If you have a lot of natural wood furniture or any rustic pieces, then choose colors that will contrast nicely against those types of accents (violet and purple are great choices). For more modern spaces, consider using bolder primary shades like red, blue, or yellow.

Step Six: Choose a color palette that works well together - You can't just pick one or two colors and call it good. If you're not sure, then use an online tool to help create your own custom palettes with complimentary shades.

Step Seven: Pick out some accent pieces for the walls - In order to balance out the space, you'll want to have a few accent pieces that will pull together your color palette. This could be artwork or possibly a chair with a certain hue in it as well.

Step Eight: Choose some colors for furniture - If you're going earthy and warm, then consider browns or tans like cognac and cream. If you're going for a more sophisticated palette, then go with black or white furniture.

Step Nine: Pick out some soft-colored rugs - This will really make your home feel cozy and welcoming by bringing the colors off of the walls onto hardwood floors or carpeting. Remember that neutrals like cream and brown can work well, but you might also want to consider a color like lavender or sage.

Step Ten: Bring in plants - Plants bring life to any environment and they can really help break up the colors on your walls by adding texture and some softness at eye level. They're great for balancing out bold hues, which is why they work so well in nature.

I hope this article has helped you take a step back and think about what colors might work best for your home. Remember that it's all about experimenting with different hues to see how they make you feel, so don't be afraid to get creative and try out new things!
